New Year Resolutions are for Lemmings!

By Rob Powell

Hey....thanks for coming back! We sure do appreciate it. A repeat reader is a compliment....for sure! Please make sure you subscribe!

Greetings for El Paso, TX…….wow…it is nice and warm here.

I am in the midst of a series of sporting events…next is the the Sun Bowl in El Paso, TX.  The Sun Bowl is hosting two teams that fell hard from the elite rankings earlier this year.  Both reached the #2 spot of the top twenty-five rankings….then ….then….almost disappeared…Oregon Ducks vs. the Bulls of University of South Florida (USF).

So what does college football have to do with wealth and real estate….Rob?  Well….I have no idea….but when I saw Boone Pickens (legendary Texas oil and real estate businessman) give  a hundred million to his alma mater, Oklahoma State, in order to improve the football program…I figure there is a relationship in there somewhere.

Anyway…..The new year is upon us and so is the tradition of New Year Resolutions…..Ugh.

Setting New Year resolutions each and every year?  Why?….there are hundreds of reasons for this…but for most, it is a date for a clean start….and an excuse to binge (for those of us going on a diet) or an excuse not to take action or not to not change a habit until January 1st.

I am going to make a controversial statement here and say that "New Year resolutions are for lemmings…."

I think New Year resolutions are stupid….

Why?  Because they are excuses for not taking action NOW.   It works like this….so you start pigging out at Thanksgiving  all the way through the New Years eve party….and you tell yourself and the other pigs around you…."I can eat like this now…because come New Years….I am going to join a gym and lose the 80 pounds."

Sound familiar….it should.

What I have learned on my journey in building relationships with the 1% is that successful people take action NOW….what I have learned about everyone else is….they do what everyone else is doing.  Status quo….New Year resolutions are a great example of status quo….

So…I challenge you…..Make one and only one resolution….to never make a New Year resolution again…AND…to take action today…right now….(okay ….that is two resolutions).  Yeah..Yeah…so I am talking out of both sides of my mouth….but you know what I am saying and you get my point…..

Next time ….I am going to tell you why I think the best selling book "The Secret" is garbage.  Yikes….!

Until next time……rob

Ok, I understand what you are trying to say but here is way you can say it much better.

Resolutions are a good thing if done to be accountable but if there is no accountability then heck they are pretty useless.

99% percent of the population don’t make themselves accountable have this problem and they don’t seem to ever change.

Remember change starts within yourself. You can’t change the fruits until you change the roots. So, you must always chose to change yourself TODAY! If you want something to happen you do it NOW not later.

Oh and another thing since I am on a roll and you may or may not want too keep reading this or what the heck…. its only computer bits….

I have been really on my self not judge other people and situations. It is really easy to find the mistakes in things. Heck, I get paid to do that! But what is golden is to find where they made the good choices and build off of that….

Imagine what a Monday morning would sound like after a football game if the guy group talk about all the great moves they did and how they could expand on them versus COMPLAIN about the mistakes people made……
Hey that is a great idea,,,,, I’m going to try that around the next time is talking sports around me.

It is always easy to find the bad in a situation… Be the other person.. Find the good in it and expand on it!

Lets just say all this above is coming from my current life experience….ok Time for me to go, and make IT better than before!

My best to you…

yeah I completely agree with you on your new blog. Most people become lazy durring this time of year and get nothing done. I refused to fall into the bear trap of the lazy mans season.

Any way Happy New Year.

By the way Is grass lands going to be participating in the success stories book that We are putting together? Emily I believe said Yes. But it was before the holidays. Just wanted to double check

Be Action Oriented and Merry….

Let me disagree, at least in part, with your Blog: New Year Resolutions are for Lemmings!

If one eats a cheeseburger on occasion it won’t make a person obese. If one eats cheeseburgers often, exclusively, and without exception, and has a sedentary lifestyle, that person can count on weight gain and probably some other adverse effects on their health.

In much the same way, it’s not New Year’s Resolutions that are bad it’s their misuse and overuse.

A New Year’s Resolution should be made from retrospection and introspection. As you point out if you “start pigging out at Thanksgiving all the way through the New Years eve party….and you tell yourself and the other pigs around you….”I can eat like this now…because come New Years….I am going to join a gym and lose the 80 pounds.” You are destined for failure.

However, if you take the time to reflect on the past year, think about what matters to you, think about what you’ve done, or not done, to bring you closer to where you want to be, then list (in writing) some concrete goals which will help you move closer to what’s important to you, a New Year’s (or Mid Year’s, or Quarterly) Resolution can be a powerful tool.

I agree completely however, there is no substitute for taking action NOW!
